The City of Southampton
Southampton is a thriving port city of around 220,000 people, with a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Its waterfront has seen centuries of history, particularly maritime history, and its medieval city walls are among the finest in the UK.
The city has plenty of green spaces, including its Common, which runs from the University to the centre of the city. The city centre has excellent shops, restaurants, cinemas, and art galleries. The University’s Highfield Campus is situated in one of the most pleasant parts of the city, with access to a wide range of shops nearby.
Southampton is just over an hour by train from London, and has its own international airport flying to many European cities. Within an hour’s drive of Southampton you can reach the cathedral cities of Winchester, Salisbury, and Chichester, the beaches of Bournemouth, the historic naval port of Portsmouth, and the splendours of the New Forest and the South Downs.
