The University of Southampton

The University of Southampton is one of the top ten research universities in the UK, and no.1 for engineering. It received its royal charter as a University in 1952 and it has become known for its commitment to innovation and interprise, its progressive, forward thinking, and its success in defining and developing new areas of research. The University has over 20,000 students, including around 4,000 postgraduates, and 5,000 members of staff. The School of Electronics and Computer Science is based on the main University Campus at Highfield, next to Southampton Common, and only two miles from the city centre.

The excellent facilities on campus include a full sports centre and swimming pool complex, the Students’ Union, the Library, Student Services Centre, a range of cafes and restaurants, and three outstanding arts venues.

Halls of residence are situated close to the Highfield Campus, and linked to it by the University’s own Uni-Link bus service.

All postgraduate students (without dependents) who are new to the University are guaranteed accommodation in halls for their first year of study. University accommodation is available for all non-EU international students (without dependents) for the full-normal duration of their studies. There is some accommodation available for families and couples, but this is limited.

The University of Southampton Open Data Map was produced by an ECS PhD Student, Colin Williams, using Open Data from the University. It's a great way to get a feel for how the university fits into the city of Southampton.

Meet our Students: Tao Sun

I chose the University of Southampton because of its world-class academic achievements, warm research atmosphere, excellent reputation, and also the very beautiful campus at Highfield. I enjoy studying and living here very much and the surroundings make my life colourful.

Tao Sun, from Wuhan, PR China, PhD student in NSI, in 2006 won the Mansell Davies prize at the Institute of Physics Biodielectrics conference for Best Poster.
